Trail Categories:Volcanic Landscapes-High Country Views

Season of Use:summer to fall

Elevation:3600 to 4200 feet above sea level

Visitor Use:Medium

Trail Talk:

Hike on newly created terrain. The Truman Trail traverses the pyroclastic flow and debris avalanche deposits north of the crater of Mount St. Helens. Discover the new plant life returning to the area and learn about the research that scientists are conducting to follow this dynamic process. Walk in awe of the magnitude of the effects which the eruption had upon this landscape. Enjoy breathtaking views of the steaming dome and the still waters of Spirit Lake.

Trail Facts:This maintained trail begins at the Windy Ridge Trailhead on Forest Road 99. It descends in elevation, following an old road bed. The trail then traverses the pumice plain and it is located by wooden post route markers. It then ascends in elevation to its junction with Boundary Trail #1.

Considerations:This is an extremely fragile environment; please note all restrictions in the area. This trail closed to mountain bikes. No water is available along the trail and shade from the sun is nonexistent. Allow 3-1/2 to 4 hours round trip from Windy Ridge to reach views of the lava dome.

Connections:

The trail connects to Abraham Trail #216D. Windy Trail #216E forms the connection between the Truman Trail #207 and the Loowit Trail #216. The Truman Trail terminates at its junction with Boundary Trail #1.

Map:Mount St. Helens, Spirit Lake West quadrangles.

Restricted Area:Travel allowed on approved trails only. Off-trail travel and camping are prohibited to protect sensitive natural features and scientific studies. Research permits are required for off-trail travel.
