Trail Talk:

Gain direct access to Mount St. Helens' most popular climbing route, Monitor Ridge. Enjoy views of Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, Mount Adams and Yale Reservoir. Travel through forest until breaking out onto the open slopes of Mount St. Helens. A massive lava flow looms at the trail's end.

Trail Facts:This maintained trail passes through the forest, terminating at the edge of a large lava flow on the open slopes of Mount St. Helens. It provides direct access to the Monitor Ridge climbing route. A climbers' bivouac is located at the trailhead.

Considerations:For travel above 4800 feet a permit is required. Those climbing Mount St. Helens can obtain more information by requesting a copy of the Climbers' Brochure or contacting Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument Headquarters. Water is unavailable at the climbers' bivouac.

Connections:

Ptarmigan Trail #216A connects directly into the Monitor Ridge climbing route and the Loowit Trail system.
