Witness the dramatic change in landscape that offers new insights into the dynamic nature of our planet. Be amazed at the rapid return of life to this once gray and seemingly bleak land. Exploring further, discover towering rock pinnacles uncloaked by the shattering force of the lateral blast. Enjoy unsurpassed views of a living laboratory where the earth's wondrous process of geological change is unfolding before our eyes. Trail Facts:This maintained trail ascends a ridge for 1/4 of a mile, offering excellent views in all directions. It continues north through the blast zone. After 1.5 miles there is a superb overlook of Spirit Lake and excellent views into the crater and dome. Beyond this point the trail narrows and passes imposing rock pinnacles and then continues on to the junction with the Boundary Trail #1 at Norway Pass. Considerations:No water is available on this trail and little shade is offered. The trail is subject to washouts beyond 1.5 miles. Connections: Independence Pass Trail #227 is one of the many trails accessed from Road 99 that explore the blast area. Others include Meta Lake Trail #210, Harmony Trail #224, Windy Ridge Sand Ladder #242, and Boundary Trail #1. The trail ties directly into the Boundary Trail #1 at Norway Pass. Map:Spirit Lake East and Spirit Lake West quadrangle. Restricted Area:Travel is allowed on approved trails only. Off-trail travel and camping are prohibited to protect sensitive natural features and scientific studies. Research permits are required for off-trail travel.
