Binoculars
A compact set of binoculars are very handy on any hiking trip. You wont miss all the details and hidden things to see on the trail.
They don't have to be the most expensive models, ruggedness is important.
It really is the easiest way to check out the surroundings and spot wildlife. Works a lot better then squinting.
A good pair of 10 x 25 or better is what I like to use.
Things to remember:
1. A strap to hang the binoculars around your neck.
2. Lighter is better.
3. A protective case and lens cleaner are good to bring along.
