Abraham Trail #216D Length:12 One Way Trail Categories:Volcanic Landscapes-High Country Views Season of Use:summer to fall Elevation:4000 to 4500 feet above sea level Visitor Use:Medium Location:begins, Loowit Trail #216; ends, Truman Trail #207 Trail Talk: Feel as if you can reach out and touch a living volcano as you hike along a ridge that skirts Mount St. Helens' east slope. Delight in the wildflowers that return each summer to paint the barren hillsides in vibrant colors. Look to the east and north and enjoy the views of neighboring volcanoes, Mount Adams and Mount Rainier. Climb to Windy Pass and look out upon a gray landscape strewn with boulders. The Plains of Abraham were created by repeated avalanches and mudflows careening off of Mount St. Helens, allowing life little chance to take root there. Trail Facts:The maintained trail climbs a ridgeline until reaching a steep sand ladder that takes you to Windy Pass. Beyond the pass the grades become gentler as you cross the Plains of Abraham. The trail ends at its junction with Loowit Trail #216. Length: 2 miles (one way), from Windy Ridge parking lot to Lahar 10 miles (one way) Considerations:There is little shade offered and no potable water. Come prepared. Connections: Abraham Trail #216 connects with Loowit Trail #216 and by Truman Trail #207. Map:Spirit Lake East quadrangle. Restricted Area:Travel allowed on approved trails only. Off-trail travel and camping are prohibited to protect sensitive natural features and scientific studies. Research permits are required for off-trail travel.
